Teen suicide Essay
In class when we were reading Romeo and Juliet and we got to their tragic end I knew that I would be interested in investigating the topic of teen suicide. I really got interested in the topic because I wanted to see what led a person to suicide? I wanted to see what where the common causes? Or the warning signs? I've seen stories on the news about people who have but I never knew why. No one has ever gotten to the soul point of why some people commit suicide. So that's why I feel obligated to as a Health Science student, where lives really do matter. Romeo and Juliet's situation is very common. Some teens believe that because someone you love has been taken away or has left that there's only thing you can do is commit suicide. Many teens have tried this and sad to say many teens have succeeded in their attempts. Just like Romeo and Juliet.
Teen suicide is a very dire problem. Teen suicide is so common that it's the third leading cause of death to people form the ages of 1524. Also 75 percent of the people who commit suicide are depressed. According to National Institute of Mental Health, those as many as 25 suicides are attempted for each one that is completed. That means that for every teen suicide that you hear of,nike free sko, there are probably at least 25 suicide attempts made. accounting for 34,598 deaths. The overall rate was 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. According to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control 10,904 high school students in grades 912. Juliet wasn't 15 so technically she didn't fit didn't fit into these stats but that doesn't mean that her death was any less important. The audience in my class believed that the suicide wasn't such a brilliant choice for Juliet. They thought it could have been avoided like many suicides.
Most common causes of teen suicides: anxiety, sadness, despair, and untreated depression. Untreated mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others is the cause for the vast majority of suicides. These can be brought on by the loss of a loved one, rejection by peers or family, and disappointment. Those with serious mental illnesses, however, often experience much more extreme reactions, reactions that can leave them mired in hopelessness. And when all hope is lost, some feel that suicide is the only solution however, they can get help and live the rest of their life. You can see with Romeo and Juliet common causes very clearly. See with Juliet she was very depressed and because Romeo had been banished. Even though everyone thought she was acting depressed because her cousin died. And with Romeo, he was very clingy and wanted to stay. His common warning signs weren't as dramatic till the end and Juliet's warning signs were semi dramatic and then they escalated through the play. She even says "My dismal scene I needs must act alone. Come, vial. (Holds out the vial)What if this mixture does not work at all? Shall I be married then tomorrow morning? No, no. This shall forbid it. Lay thou there. (Lays her knife down). Where she states if the potion doesn't work I will stab myself than marry Paris and live without Romeo.
Studies show that four out of five teens that attempt suicide has been shown very clear warning signs. Some warning signs are as very subtle as Complains more frequently of boredom, Does not respond as before to praise, Loss of interest in schoolwork, Hard time concentrating and paying attention, Problems at work and losing interest in a job, Sleep changes and Changes in eating habits. Or it can be as blunt as Disinterest in favorite extracurricular activities, Substance abuse, Behavioral problems, Withdrawing from family and friends, Neglects hygiene and other matters of personal appearance, Emotional distress brings on physical complaints, Declining grades in school, and Risk taking behaviors . But suicide behavior is complex. Some risk factors vary with age, gender, or ethnic group and may occur in combination or change over time.
Say Romeo and Juliet were both saved seconds before attempting and the family let there love flourish. That wouldn't help the situation at all. The mental state of these teens would be compared to a fried egg. Both these teens may have started hurting themselves and abusing medical substances. And since there a couple they would have kept these things to themselves. There family would have thought they were okay if the put on an act that they where. Also if they decided to attempt again the family might not see any common warning sign because the teen might try to be more secretive.
If you think your friend might attempt suicide you can help by asking if the person is thinking about suicide, listen openly and without judging, believe what a person says, and take all threats seriously, never keep someone suicidal feelings a secret, share responsibility by getting others involved, reassure the person that help is available, and support and encourage him/her to reach out to sources of help in the community, act immediately if you feel someone is at imminent risk for suicide by involving others who can help and if necessary make contact with the police, emergency services, or a hospital to ensure the person safety. In the play the family could have been a little more supportive of there love. They should have been more in touch with there child instead of the nurse. If they were they would have knew she loved Romeo and then he wouldn't have been banished and they could still love each other forever. And they wouldn't have committed suicide.
