Hard work pays off
The fundamentals are crucial to an athlete's success as is dedication to the sport. For five athletes their hard work and dedication has paid dividends.
These five all made under14 or under15 provincial basketball teams, something they believe they wouldn't have attained if it was not for the time put in by North Nova girls head coach Anne Armstrong.
"Everything she's taught us helped me with my skill set and understanding what to expect when I entered tryouts," said Jamie McCarron. "There are so many parts to the game and she really helps to break it down so that we are strong in each individual part of our game."
Although the girls don't all play with North Nova, they are all members of a club that Armstrong started in April, the Pictou County Lightning girls basketball club. The goal of the program is to improve fundamental skills for girls when regular programs are not in season.
"This program means so much to these girls and I because without this program a lot of girls wouldn't be able to play in the summer," said McCarron. "What we learn here prepares us for summer provincial teams or for junior or senior high basketball teams we will be playing on or trying out for in the fall."
The grade 912 group of the program has 23 athletes involved from different teams throughout the region. Alyson Fulton moved to the county from Halifax where she played with Slam before playing with East Pictou.
Aside from working on fundamentals with the coaches, she believes this club has helped her game by being on the same court as players from other schools and teams that all have a different style of play that she has learned from.
"There's different intensity levels, different moves, different styles of play and it all makes your game better," said Fulton. "Some people play with real intensity so it forces you to step up your game. Anne has helped me to make my game more fundamentally strong, but by watching other players on the court I have learned a few things that can make my game more wellrounded."
Being lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of this group was a sentiment shared by all athletes. Kendra MacKinnon said she has had multiple coaches throughout her time playing basketball, but has learned a lot about attention to detail.
"She has an attention to detail that most players don't get to experience from a coach," said MacKinnon. "Every time we step on the court with her she always finds something that we're doing that we can improve on. When we improve the minor things she notices it tends to make our overall game better."
